Summary

Pencil and notepad

Writing is at the core of all my creative ventures. I consider myself a storyteller that is able to adapt that skill across multiple mediums and capitalize on the strengths they provide to tell interesting, engaging, and immersive stories.

"Nothing Personal" - (Comedic Short)

Created to demonstrate an ability to write for television and film. I wrote an original script then worked to produce it and bring it to life on the screen

Section 1:

Written Editorials

Written Editorials are articles that I was contracted to write for various online publications particularly in the field of video games. Currently I have written for "Game Rant" and "The Games Cabin". The third row of articles are spec articles that landed me the gigs at the aforementioned publications.

" While none of the aforementioned amputations of the ending content can fairly be attributed to Kojima’s directing, my apathy to its absence absolutely can be." - Excerpt from the opinion article

"Game History Monologue" - (Writing Sample)

Game Hsitory: The History Of Games - Video Game's First Rockstar (Excerpt)Drake Cummings
00:00 / 02:28

The time period was the mid to late 90s. Kurt Cobain had just introduced himself to the loud talkative end of a shotgun in 94. A tragic event in the midst of a tragic decade, darker than most seem to remember. But who could blame you, after all, this time was filled with fun colors, whacky fashion, and the fresh prince of bell air, but behind all the purple and cyan pastels was a darker reality, an era introduced with the LA Riots, capped off with the Columbine Shooting with the Oklahoma City bombing and the Waco siege fit snuggly in the middle. The eardrums of the youth are filled with Nine Inch Nails and Metallica. For every brightly colored wind breaker wearing cheer captain there was a greasy long-haired kid wearing all black, blaring metal music and scanning through forum posts on the information super highway. The world was changing as the move to the digital future had begun. Computers and the internet finally gave an escape to those seeking it. Now people could send some electronic mail or hop into a chat room to have a nuanced discussion of how the president sexually exploited a young impressionable intern. Or in many cases ignorantly victim blame and contribute to the negative diatribe that would effectively ruin that 22 year old’s chance at a normal life. But if you need a distraction from the political clown show you could use that same computer to experience the cutting edge of a medium positioned at the crossroads of entertainment and technology, video games. It too was moving into the future being propelled by the hype of two groundbreaking innovations 3D and online play. A strange new competitor in the space had also just arrived. Sony, not just making Walkmans anymore, this tech giant from Japan decided to enter the console market. The PS1 came out in December of 94, a thing that Kurt Cobain would never play on account of him having a bullet dinner only months prior. Maybe if he had experienced the raw power of ridge racer he would see that maybe life isn’t so bad. But our story today isn’t about how PlayStation could have saved Kurt Cobain had it just been a few months earlier to market, it’s about how the most ambitious, most cutting edge PC game directed by one of the biggest names in games at the time shows us what happens when you fly too close to the sun.

Monologue are carefully written set ups that act as preludes to my episodes of "Game History", Which is a spin-off to the "Film History" podcast that I co-host. The "Game History" episodes are carefully researched and written entirely by me, however with the conversational nature of podcasts it can be hard to clip out exact examples of my work. The monologue is an uninterrupted introduction to the episode's topic showcasing my writer's voice that balances informative exposition with comedic accents.
